ZSR Public Services Student Assistant Guide: Welcome Desk

This guide is for students working in Public Services.

Welcome to working at the Welcome Desk!

Welcome Desk

The position at the Welcome Desk has many customer service aspects. Looking up, smiling, or saying hello to each patron presents a welcoming and helpful attitude at the desk, as yours is the first face that patrons see in the library. Please make sure you look up and acknowledge everyone that enters the library. This is your most important responsibility in this position!

  • A laptop, iPad, or phone are allowed at the Welcome Desk, but the desk should remain clear and uncluttered. You are also allowed to study or read, but please remember your first priority is to be aware of your surroundings.
  • Headphones are NOT allowed.
  • No food is allowed but drinks are ok.
  • Talking on your phone is prohibited.
  • Please do not prop your feet up on the desk.
  • Please minimize conversation with friends to only a few minutes so as not to be distracted. Please do not let friends sit on the Welcome Desk, or pull the bench over to sit on it.
  • You will need to familiarize yourself with locations inside the library (restrooms, Periodicals, Reference, Special Collections...), as well as other buildings on campus, since sometimes there are visitors on campus touring the library. A campus map is located on the desk.
  • Please wait for your replacement to arrive at the desk before leaving your shift. If they are late, please call the Library Services Desk and another student will be sent to replace you. Never leave the Welcome Desk unattended.
  • If any problem arises or if you need to leave the Welcome Desk for any reason, please call the Library Services Desk (X4932) and ask for assistance.
