There are a variety of tasks and activities that go on at the Public Services Desk. The main task at the Public Services Desk is assisting patrons with checking books and Reserve material in and out. This list will help orient you to the main tasks and policies.
ID Cards: It is very important that the patron presents their ID card to check out materials. If a patron is trying to check material out without an ID, please refer them to a supervisor.
Check out procedure: When you scan a patron's ID card, please check the screen to make sure the name matches the one on the card. As you check the materials out, please verify that the titles are correct and that the computer assigned due date corresponds to the patron type.
Check in procedure: The same attention is needed when checking in returned materials. Make sure that the cursor is in the correct box and that the material has been checked in (just because the scanner beeps, doesn't mean that the material was checked in. You must have the cursor in the appropriate box).
Message Boxes: Often, message boxes will pop up when you are checking materials in and out. Please read them carefully and get a staff member if you are unsure what to do. Once you are ready to continue, please make sure that the cursor is back in the appropriate box.
Assisting Patrons: Patrons will also ask you for help in locating materials. Please look items up on the computer and give location and status information.
Group Study Rooms/Carrels: Patrons may ask you how to reserve one. The library has ten group study rooms:
- Rooms 225-228 are located down the hallway directly in front of the Library Services Desk
- Room 402 is located on Reynolds Wing, level 4
- Rooms 676-677 are located on Wilson Wing, level 6
- Rooms 203A and 203B are located in the back of Smith's
- Room 232 is located in the back of the 24/7 Study Room.
There are also reservable individual study carrels located on Reynolds 1, 2, and 3 (the carrels on Reynolds 4 and 5 are first come, first serve). To sign up for a room or carrel go here: room reservation sign up. Students can sign up for Study Rooms online by going to the Library Home Page, clicking on the "Find" drop down menu in the upper right, and selecting "Study Space."
Printing:
A Deacon OneCard, (WFU Student ID) is your copy card. If a library guest needs to print or photocopy, please refer the user to a Public Services staff member.
Items on hold:
There are 2 places where items on hold may be found: ZSR Library books, Interlibrary Loans, Off-Site Collection, and Media will be stored in the smart lockers located in the west all-night study room. If the lockers are full or items were not picked up in a timely manner, items will be put on a hold shelf located in the sorting room. Patrons will be notified via email as to which location their materials can be found.
Reserve items:
Required readings for courses are often placed on Reserve. Reserve materials such as books and media are made available for limited loan periods. This assures students access to needed materials. The majority of these items can be checked out for a maximum of two hours, with their use restricted to inside the library. Other loan periods can be set by the professor and include one day, three day, and seven day check outs. This will be indicated by a sticker placed on the spine of the item. The computer will already have set the due date for this items. Reserve book items also have a different due date inside the front cover.
If you ever have a question about these items, please ask a staff member.
Media collection:
The DVD collection in the ZSR Library is housed on the 4th floor of the Wilson Wing. Patrons will bring the DVD/Blu-Ray box down to the Circulation Desk and we will pull the discs which are located behind the desk. Patrons can search for titles in the library catalog.
Lockers:
The library has 90 lockers available for check-out. The lockers are located down the hallway directly in front of the Circulation Desk. Each locker key has a barcode attached to it. The check-out period for all lockers is 2 weeks. Use is restricted to UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY!
