Seasonal Reminders

Hurricane Preparedness:

In the 2021 Hurricane Season: going by the major sites that offer predictions, we should expect 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

As you think about readiness, you may want to review these sites:

Ready NC
NWS Hurricane Preparedness Page
American Red Cross - Survival Kit Supplies

In the event any evacuation looks likely, you might consider sharing your location on Google Maps with friends and family, and downloading offline maps for places you'll try to get to (in addition to paper maps in your car). Remember that your phone also provides a handy flashlight and, in most cases, a compass (may require a compass app).

  • get the smartphone apps for your health, homeowners, and auto insurance. In a pinch, those can usually display a virtual insurance card with account numbers, etc.
  • print out and carry backup authentication codes for your WFU Google login and Facebook (if you're on FB): you may need those to login somewhere and let online contacts know you're safe. You'll also want to make sure you know those passwords.
  • carry paper copies of contact phone numbers, because how many of us know any phone numbers any more?

Also frequently overlooked: know how to turn off your electricity, water, and gas.
