Databases

Linguistics Databases

Academic Search Complete
Journal articles on many subjects.  Good source for most topics.  In this database I recommend limiting to "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals" to avoid popular magazines.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts

MLA International Bibliography
Covers journal articles in the fields of literature, linguistics and folklore more comprehensively than Academic Search Premier.  Also includes references to individual book chapters, which is an important way of publishing in this field.

History Databases

Choose based on what period you're investigating.

L'Annee Philologique
Ancient Greece and Rome, Tacitus.  Despite the title, this database is not in French.

International Medieval Bibliography (IMB)
Iter: Gateway to the Middle Ages and Renaissance
Two databases that cover all aspects of the medieval period.  Go to the Advanced Search screen to limit to English or German. Warning: The WFU Full Text Options is flaky with these two databases.  If you cannot find the full text on the first try, try again by searching the ZSR catalog for the book or journal title.

Historical Abstracts
European History, 1450-present

Other Databases

Literature Resource Center
Has some literature criticism, but its best feature is the overviews of works.

ZSR Library Catalog
Best source for books.

Search Tips

Watch out for variant spellings of names of works, characters, etc.

Example: An article about The Ring of the Nibelung may use the title Der Ring des Nibelungen, even if the article is in English.

Use a * to cut off a word at its stem, e.g. Nibelung*

Type the word AND (or use the second row) if you want to enter more than one word that is not an exact phrase.

Therefore
ring AND nibelung*
will retrieve the most complete set of matches.

If you can't use a star to search for spelling variants, use OR
brynhildr or brunnhilde
