  1. Compile a list of industry competitors.

  2. Gather industry background reports (if available).
     

  3. Find and read articles about the industry.

  4. Identify industry associations.

  5. Find market research (if available).

The Basics of Industry Research

  1. When researching an industry, you may want to look it up first in a company database such as S&P Cap IQ or Corporate Affiliations to learn some basic information about the companies that make up the industry.  

  2. Read reports in industry background databases such as IBISWorld and Business Monitor Online.

  3. Use article databases such as ProQuest ABI/Inform and Nexis Uni to find articles about the industry.

  4. Use Google and other search engines to identify industry associations and other industry-related organizations. 

  5. Use market research databases such as Euromonitor, Mintel, BCC Research and Gartner to research industry products and services.
