Fall 2020-Remote Religious Studies Resources

As you are working on research for your School of Divinity courses, please let me know if I can help in any way!  Please feel free to email me and we can discuss your questions over email, or we can set up a virtual research session in Zoom, WebEx, or Google Meet.  My office hours will be Wednesday 3-5p via Zoom.  Please email me for the link, or access the link from the weekly School of Divinity Link email.

In the boxes below, I will add links for the resources that are being made available during this time of need.  This will be updated as I learn of new resources, so check back when you can.  Please contact me if you find a resource you think could benefit other students!

Don't forget that ZSR already has access to thousands of ebooks and millions of online articles through our regular resources in the library catalog and databases such as Atla and JSTOROxford Biblical Studies Online will be particularly helpful right now, and see the Reference tab above for links to other online reference resources.  Additionally, we have access to thousands of streaming films and online images if you need multimedia resources.  Get tips on finding and using these resources from the tabs above.

And last, but not least, remember to cite your sources!  The Turabian style guide can help you with formatting citations for the sources you find.

Stay healthy and well!

Ebook Commentaries

The commentary series listed here replicate as far as possible what is in the Commentary section of the Reference Department, based on ebook availability.  These are direct links to what is currently available for each series, keeping in mind that, even in print, there may not be a volume for each biblical book in a series.

Anchor Bible Dictionary (temporary access via the Hathi Trust)
International Critical Commentary (access is part of a temporary trial, use VPN)
New Interpreter's Bible (temporary access via the Hathi Trust: volumes 1, 4, 7, 9 and volumes 2-3, and 5-12)
Women's Bible Commentary (one volume commentary)

Visual Commentary on Scripture (This online resource, from King's College London, "...is a virtual exhibition comprising a biblical passage, three art works, and their associated commentaries.")

You may also want to search in the library catalog for other commentaries that are not part of these series.  To do this, go to the library catalog and enter the name of the book you are searching for and the word "comment*".

On the results page, limit to electronic books under location or format.

Keep in mind that our catalog includes many digitized ebooks of sermons, commentaries, and letters from the 16th to 19th centuries.  You may want to also limit by publication date range if your particular search is overwhelmed with results from these primary source collections.

Other Online Resources

Please see the websites tab above for other helpful online resources.  The resources in this section are only available temporarily in response to the current crisis.
