ZSR Special Collections & Archives

ZSR's Special Collection and Archives may contain useful materials on your topic. There are a variety of ways to search these materials, depending on their format. The SC&A website contains more information about hours and research help.

1. Search SCA materials (including books) in the library catalog. These include books, pamphlets, maps, and other materials dating from the 15th-21st centuries.

2. Search SC&A finding aids to locate materials in collections that are not digitized. (Contact SC&A for help using finding aids!)

Primary Sources for Women
Gertrude and Max Hoffman Papers
Gertrude Hoffmann was known as a vaudevillian, mimic, dancer, and the director of The Gertrude Hoffmann Girls.
Harold T.P. Hayes Papers
Harold Hayes, a 1948 graduate of Wake Forest College, is perhaps best known for his role as editor of Esquire magazine (1963 to 1973).
Sophie Stevens Lanneau Papers
Sophie Lanneau was a graduate of Meredith College, and a teacher and Southern Baptist Convention educational missionary to China, 1907 to 1951.
Katie Murray Papers
Katie Murray was a native of Rose Hill, Duplin county, North Carolina. She served as a Southern Baptist missionary in China and Taiwan from 1922 until her retirement in 1962.
Fannie Exile Scudder Heck Papers
Fannie Exile Scudder Heck was the first president of the Woman's Missionary Union of North Carolina (1886-1915), and the first president of the Southern Baptist Convention Woman's Missionary Union (1895-1899, 1906-1915).
Foy Johnson Willingham Farmer Papers
Foy Johnson Willingham Farmer was a Southern Baptist Convention missionary to Japan, 1911-21; a trustee of Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina; and a leader in the North Carolina and Southern Baptist Convention Woman's Missionary Union.
Evelyn P. Foote Papers
Evelyn Patricia "Pat" Foote served as an officer in the United States Army for 30 years, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. Her career is marked by several "firsts" for female Army Officers, and she is considered an expert in issues affecting American women in military service.
Maya Angelou Film and Theater Collection
The Maya Angelou Film and Theater Collection documents the author and poet's extensive work in the performing arts. The collection contains materials relating to Angelou's work as a playwright, actor, director, screenwriter, interviewer, and documentary filmmaker. Formats include manuscript, print, audio, and video.
George Pennell Collection of Circus Materials
George Pennell was a Wake Forest College alumnus (1914) and Board of Trustees member. This collection documents Pennell's personal and professional interests. Materials document a variety of circuses and include legal documents, photographs, clippings, periodicals, posters, and correspondence.

Collegiate Digest was a periodical of national college news and photography published by the Associated Collegiate Press. The publication was distributed nationally to various institutions of higher education. The issues in this collection were originally placed as inserts within Wake Forest University's Old Gold and Black student newspaper between 1935 and 1936.

World War I Posters
American charities and the government launched campaigns through posters to encourage civilians to support the war effort. This collection contains propaganda posters pertaining to World War I publicizing efforts of organizations including the United states Food Administration, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), the Red Cross, the United States Treasury department, and other American and allied organizations.
