The Future of Newspapers

In the past year, a lot of discussion has been occuring about the future of news sources.

And there have been many other articles on the topics as well. For this assignment, please read the articles above, think about your use of newspapers, news magazines, news radio and comment about the current situation. What do you use news for? What place does it have in research in the Social Sciences? Would you miss it if it went away? Why? Why are professional journalists (as opposed to iReporters, for example) important? What are the risks of having a news industry dependent on advertising revenues rather than subscription income?

These are examples of the kind of questions for you to consider but are not the only ones that may arise. We leave it up to you to comment on the state of news in this country as you see fit. But however you respond you need to show evidence that you read these articles and have given it some serious thought.

We will be awarding between 1 and 5 extra credit points depending on the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of your response.
