Open Access: OA Support at WFU

Open Access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. (Peter Suber, "A Very Brief Introduction to Open Access")

OA Fund Eligibility

To be eligible for support from the Open Access Publishing Fund, your publication must appear in a fully open access (OA) journal, book, or book series. Hybrid journals — those that charge fees for optional open access in an otherwise subscription-based publication — are not eligible.

To verify whether your publication qualifies, try one or more of the following:

  • Check the journal in DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals): Look up the journal title at https://doaj.org to confirm it’s listed and marked as “Journal license: CC BY” or similar.
  • Check the publisher in OASPA (Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association): Visit https://oaspa.org/membership/members to see if the publisher is a member, and whether the relevant journal or book series is fully OA.
  • Use the Open Access Policy Finder: Try the Jisc Open Access Policy Finder at https://journalcheckertool.org. Enter the journal name, your funder (if any), and institution for more info on OA policies.
  • Check the journal or publisher’s website directly: A fully open access publication will state that all articles are freely available online upon publication — not just select ones. Watch out for terms like “Open Choice,” “Optional Open Access,” or “Hybrid Open Access,” which indicate the publication is not fully OA.

If you’re unsure, you can still submit your application — we’ll review eligibility during intake and follow up with any questions.
